King-size Snickers bars will soon go the way of Supersize fries and Biggie sodas.
Mars Inc., the company responsible for popular candy bars like Snickers and Milky Way, says that by 2013, all of its candy bars will have 250 calories or less. The cutback is part of the company's effort to curtail obesity and encourage "responsible snacking."
The change means that a number of regular-size candy bars will require slim-downs as well. The 2-ounce Snickers bar on shelves today rings in at 280 calories while a 3 Musketeers bar contains 260 calories.
The 540-calorie king-size Snickers bar will be repackaged into bags with two or four smaller bars, with the idea that portions of the candy can be saved for later, reports NPR.
This is not the first time Mars Inc. has experimented with shrinking its candy bars. In 2009, Mars UK downsized its chocolates, reducing the calorie count of the Mars bar by 19. Although the company claimed the reduction was part of a public health initiative, it later admitted to a need to cut costs.
