KitKat arrives for Google Play Edition Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One

Owners of the more pure Android experience HTC One and Galaxy S4 should start seeing KitKat updates from today.

Google has announced that Android 4.4, known as KitKat, is being delivered to Google Play Edition handsets from today, just days after Moto X owners in the US began getting their OS upgrade.

Eleven days after HTC handed off its KitKat code to Google for the HTC One Google Play Edition, owners of the device should start to see the update coming through via the Google Play store from today, according to a Google+ post from the Android team today. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition should also receive the update shortly.

The HTC One Google Play Edition lacks the Sense UI found on the standard edition One. When KitKat is delivered to the latter device early next year, it will also bring the latest version of Sense, upgrading the software version 5.5.

It appears some Nexus 4 owners have also received an over the air update to Android 4.4, and Google Product forums have filled up with reports of problems after the OS had installed. According to Android Police, they're fairly significant issues too, such as a broken Home button, or problems with the dialler and Quick Settings toggle.

Google-owned Motorola was the among the first handset makers to deliver KitKat to its Android devices, confirming delivery of 4.4 to US Moto X owners on Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and AT&T this week. The company said it will announce KitKat availability on other carriers and other countries "very soon".

Android 4.4 first shipped with the Nexus 5, announced in late October . Besides the Nexus devices that have already begun to receive the update, KitKat should be available for the Nexus 7 2012 edition and Nexus 10 before too long, but it won't be coming to the Galaxy Nexus, which Google has said is too old for the update .

So far HTC is the only other Android device maker to confirm a rough date for KitKat and expects to begin rolling that out in January for the HTC One .
