Leaked Galaxy S6 photo shows dual-edged handset

Images leaked to ZDNet Korea show what could be the next Samsung Galaxy flagship S6 and Galaxy Edge handsets.

ZDNet Korea and CNET Korea have obtained an exclusive photo from sources at South Korean distributors of Samsung Electronics' handsets of what looks like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 "Edge".

The photo shows five phones with "Galaxy S6" and "Galaxy Edge" written at the top-right side.

First, from left, is what appears to be a coverless standard Galaxy S6, while the second is the flagship phone wrapped in covers made by Verus, a top South Korean smartphone cover maker.

The fourth, and a fifth lying down, shows phones that are edged on the side. The photo confirms that the Edge version of the S6 will be dual edged: On the fourth, the right side is edged, and the fifth shows that the left side is edged, which means that both sides are wrapped by the display.

The fifth phone shows that the bezel -- which looks metallic and quite thick -- of the visible edged side, unlike the Galaxy Note Edge, is protruding outwards. This seems to indicate that the fork-looking silver line shown in Samsung's recently sent invitation was the hint for the particular wraparound design of the Edge.

The physical home button is still very much alive, it seems, while the glimpse of the fifth phone shows that the front of the S6 will resemble its predecessors the S5, S4, and S3.

The image strikingly resembles recently leaked schematics of the S6 from SamMobile, if it was fleshed out.

It is unclear from the photo whether the S6 and its edged brother are fully metal, or whether it will be unibody. But it is clear that the outer rims are metal, much like the S5.

One of the sources told ZDNet Korea that South Korean smartphone case makers are already mass producing cases for the S6 and its edged version based on the phones themselves and metal moulds of them provided by Samsung.

Separately, Samsung insiders have told ZDNet Korea that the "Edge" version of the Galaxy S6 will be dual edged, and that the edged sides will be symmetrical. It will also use aluminium.

Samsung SDI said it is ramping up production of polyester batteries for unspecified clients.

Some believe this is an indication that the S6 will be unibody and will pack a polyester battery. A Verus spokesperson declined to comment.

Samsung spokespersons were unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
