LogMeIn Central adds remote antivirus management

Summary:LogMeIn has added a new antivirus management feature — free to existing Pro subscribers — to its LogMeIn Central remote management console.

In a move that will be welcomed by businesses lacking the luxury of a centralised antivirus solution, LogMeIn has added a new antivirus management feature to its LogMeIn Central remote management console.

If a supported antivirus product is installed on the host PC (which needs to have the latest version of the LogMeIn client and a LogMeIn Pro subscription), LogMeIn Central will show the status of the program. For fully-supported programs, the parameters shown include the status of definition updates, virus scans and real-time protection. Scans and updates can be initiated via a button click, without having to initiate a remote control session, and real-time protection can also be enabled if the program has this feature.

Programs with partial support will be missing one or more of these capabilities, and those with minimal support will show the status of definition updates, although issues will need to be fixed using a remote control session. The list of supported programs includes those that may be under their own remote management system, and LogMeIn Central should not affect the operation of these. It will obviously be unable to determine definition updates for cloud-based antivirus software, as we discovered on a PC using Webroot SecureAnywhere. With a supported product (Microsoft Security Essentials) we were able to use all the features.

A complete list of software with full, partial and minimal support is available at the LogMeIn website.

A new health icon has been added to the Home page, based on the status alerts, Windows updates and antivirus status. Hovering over the icon brings up clickable links to each item that needs to be reviewed.

Any threats discovered during antivirus scans are listed in a threat log on the computer's antivirus status tab in the LogMeIn Central dashboard, along with the other status information.

The new service comes as a free upgrade for existing Pro subscriptions, and although it's by no means a replacement for managed antivirus products, it adds very useful functionality for smaller businesses using standalone antivirus software.

LogMeIn Pro costs £34.95 for a single PC for one year (bulk licensing discounts are available); LogMeIn Central costs £176 per year.
