BT is to add 25,000 extra hotspots to its Wi-Fi network ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.

The telco plans to have 500,000 hotspots up and running in time for the Games, which kick off on 27 July. BT already has 475,000 hotspots in Greater London located in both businesses and homes, as well as outdoor hotspots in the borough of Westminster.

BT is also supplying the Wi-Fi for the Olympic venues, and is setting up over 1,000 access points across the nine Olympic venues including the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome.

Other initiatives to increase communications capacity ahead of the games include plans to bring mobile coverage to the Channel Tunnel.
