Business internet service provider (ISP) UUnet has confirmed it has suffered a major outage at its Docklands-based centre, which hosts web servers for corporate customers including the London Stock Exchange.

A silicon.com reader emailed us informing us of the problem. He was told by the ISP that an upgrade late last night caused the failure at approximately 4am. A spokesman for UUnet said: "We were upgrading some software starting at 4am this morning when our engineers hit a problem right at the end of the session. "The problem required individual routers to be reconfigured. This process has been completed now [3pm BST]. We are very sorry for any inconvenience our customers have suffered." The spokesman admitted some customers with service level agreements could be in line for compensation. A spokesman for the London Stock Exchange said its site was unavailable internally or externally until 2pm (BST).
