Magnetic carbon? Mind bending graphene strikes again

Researchers at Manchester University – spiritual home of graphene – have now discovered how to magnetise the wonder-material. Yes, you read that right: they have magnetised carbon.

Researchers at Manchester University – spiritual home of graphene – have now discovered how to magnetise the wonder-material. Yes, you read that right: they have magnetised carbon. Enough to be useful in spintronics, perhaps.

According to The Engineer, the research team were able to magnetise the carbon lattice with only the smallest modifications to the fabrication process.

Lead researcher Irina Grigorieva explained that the team took two approaches: either they studded the graphene lattice with another non-magnetic material, such as fluorine, or they knocked out some of the carbon atoms, leaving holes, or vacancies, behind.

Provided there was enough distance between the added atoms or vacancies, they added to the overall magnetism of the material.
