Maxis extends 4G LTE service to Apple devices

Summary:Malaysian telco is enabling 4G LTE access to the iPhone 5, iPad mini, and fourth-generation iPad as it looks to generate more buzz for the wireless service among local consumers.

Malaysian consumers with Apple's iPhone 5, iPad mini and the fourth-generation iPad can now get access to 4G LTE services after telco Maxis expanded its service coverage.

According to a report by Bernama Tuesday, the three Apple devices join Nokia's Lumia 920 and HTC's One XL smartphones as the only devices activated for the next-generation wireless network as the telco looks to increase the number of compatible devices available on the market.

It also quadrupled its 4G LTE coverage area to allow over 100,000 customers to access its service, the report noted.

Mark Dioguardi, joint-CEO at Maxis, said: "We will expand 4G LTE coverage to more areas in the Klang Valley, as well as Penang and Johor Baharu by the third quarter of 2013."

The telco had in December last year announced it would set aside 500 million ringgit (US$163.2 million) over the next three years to activate its Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services.
