McAfee has announced its WebShield 3.0 software, which adds policy enforcement, improved content scanning and further management features to its family of e250, e500 and e1000 security appliances. Sitting inside any firewall, this secure content management series provides anti-virus protection, content scanning and optional anti-spam protection at the e-mail gateway.

WebShield scans both incoming and outgoing SMTP, HTTP, FTP and POP3 content. Its policy support feature enables administrators to identify logical groups and apply different rules for anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering.

A new dashboard and configuration wizard reveal more about system health and information status. SMTP transport logging supports debugging, troubleshooting and forensic activity.

The e500 appliance is designed for medium to large businesses; the e1000 is aimed at enterprises. Built-in load balancing allows using multiple appliances for greater performance.

Spam protection is provided via the optional McAfee SpamKiller software, which can run on any of these appliances. McAfee’s ePolicy Orchestrator can be integrated with them to report on key virus activity at the gateway, content rules that have been triggered and messages that have been identified as spam. Full virus trend analysis and reporting are available.

The WebShield appliances are available now. Prices start at $1700 for the e250 appliance plus $1480 for WebShield software for 100 nodes and range up to $12,588 for the e1000 plus $60,000 for WebShield for 10,000 nodes.
