Micro Focus ends legal row with NSW Police and A-G's Department

Summary:The UK-based vendor has stopped pursuing the government departments in a legal battle over software licensing after both departments agreed to settle out of court.

Micro Focus has settled a software licensing Federal Court case with the NSW Police and Attorney-General's Department in a legal scrum dating back to 2010.

The UK-based software company first took NSW Police to the Federal Court in 2010 after the law-enforcement agency allegedly used its ViewNow software without licences. For this, Micro Focus sought AU$10 million in damages.

NSW Police had also allegedly shared the illegal software with staff from the NSW Ombudsman, NSW Attorney-General's Department, the Department of Corrective Services, and the Police Integrity Commission. The government departments were dragged into the legal drama, though most of them chose to settle out of court.

The vendor then fired off new allegations that the NSW Police tried to replace the illegal Micro Focus software with another batch of pirated ViewNow software. The law-enforcement agency fought back, disputing the ownership of the software in question .

Federal Court proceedings were dismissed in October 2012, and the case is now closed. A Micro Focus spokesperson confirmed to ZDNet an ITNews report that the company had reached a settlement with the NSW Police at that time.

The NSW attorney-general settled out of court another case with Micro Focus this month that related to the use of another piece of Micro Focus software, SNA Server.

Micro Focus was unable to disclose additional information regarding both the settlements.
