Microsoft has named Sheila Gulati, General Manager of the company's Developer and Platform Evangelism unit, as the new head of the company's application-platform and developer marketing business.

Gulati is taking the post that was most recently filled by Steve Guggenheimer. Microsoft acknowledged in Febraury that Guggenheimer was moving to a new role, as the new Corporate Vice President in charge of Microsoft’s OEM Division, as of early March.

Gulati confirmed that she was taking over as Microsoft's new app-platform head.

Gulati was previously Director, Developer and Platform Evangelism Microsoft India. Before that, she was the Worldwide Business Manager for the Server and Tools business under former Server and Tools boss Eric Rudder, where she participated in Microsoft's acquisition, investment and business strategy planning. Before joining Microsoft, Gulati was an investment banker in Silicon Valley at Robertson Stephens.

Guggenheimer -- and now Gulati -- will be responsible for "Microsoft’s cross-company Application Platform strategy and its sales and marketing initiatives, in conjunction with the worldwide development, sales and evangelism organizations... as well as the global Microsoft SQL Server, BizTalk Server and Developer Tools marketing organizations."

(Windows Server, SQL Server, BizTalk Server and tools, along with other "connected-systems" products and services are what Microsoft considers its application platform.)

Gulati is listed as a regional finalist for a spot in the 2008 White House Fellows program. I'm thinking that she probably will be a little too busy to take that spot now....
