Mobile app market worth $27 billion

Apps designed for iOS products will bring in two-thirds of total app revenue this year.

A new study from ABI Research projects the mobile app market will be worth $27 billion in 2013, up from previous estimates.

What's the best market for app developers? It seems to be Apple's iOS, which is expected to account for more than two-thirds of the total revenue -- more than $18 billion.

“Although Google’s Android OS recently surpassed Apple in terms of total app numbers, iOS users continue to prove they’re more willing to depart with their cash," said Josh Flood, a senior analyst at ABI, in a statement. "The revenue gap between the two leading OSes looks unlikely to close over the next 18 months.”

And while smartphones have been the main drivers in app revenue growth, tablets are now catching up. By 2017, ABI projects that tablets will overtake smartphones in app revenue.

During that time, we'll also see app revenues grow considerably. Total revenue is expected to reach $63 billion by 2017 .
