Money proves popular on the Web

Survey shows that surfers really enjoy checking out business online
Written by Graeme Wearden, Contributor

Financial Web sites are proving popular with Brits as nearly a third of UK surfers go online over the summer to check out business information, says research published Monday.

According to Internet research group MMXI Europe, banking, insurance and investing have overtaken in popularity the more traditional news, travel and sports sites. Over 3.4 million people visited a business or finance Web sites in August, out of a total of 10.8 million home Internet users in the UK.

The most popular bank Web site was Barclays.co.uk, which attracted 641,000 users, ahead of Lloydstsb.com, Egg.com, Nationwide.co.uk and Barclaycard.co.uk, which rose to fifth in August from tenth in July.

MMXI believes that the banking sector is becoming one of the most competitive in the Internet market, because of promotional activity and the ease by which customers can move their accounts.
