Morfik updates AppsBuilder to support the iPhone

I received an e-mail from a friend at Morfik the other day. You may remember Morfik as one of the early entrants in the RIA space who jolted a lot of people when they demonstrated a desktop version of Google's mail service a while back. They've just announced that AppsBuilder, their AJAX development framework can be used to develop and deliver web-based applications to everyone's favorite new mobile device (OK – that's a stretch – not everyone's).

Morfik iChess for iPhone
I received an e-mail from a friend at Morfik the other day. You may remember Morfik as one of the early entrants in the RIA space who jolted a lot of people when they demonstrated a desktop version of Google's mail service a while back. They've just announced that AppsBuilder, their AJAX development framework can be used to develop and deliver web-based applications to everyone's favorite new mobile device (OK – that's a stretch – not everyone's).

Pictured here is a sample application Morfik has created to demonstrate the kind of rich application experience that can be created using their AppsBuilder tool. It's a quick-to-load chess game that is easily played using the iPhone touchscreen.

From the announcement:

Web 2.0 applications can now easily be designed for the iPhone with Morfik's AppsBuilder, opening the possibility of quickly extending iPhone's capabilities without compromising its reliability or security.

Members of Morfik's staff have been working to create versions of existing Morfik applications optimized for the device's screen. "It is only a matter of adjusting the layout of an application so that it can fit directly into the iPhone's native resolution, without expressly relying on its built in zoom capabilities." said Martin Roberts, a Morfik engineer.

Morfik AppsBuilder empowers developers to create sophisticated applications, from games to database-oriented business services that are written in a high-level language of their choice, are 100% Ajax based and run across all major all major browsers including the iPhone's built-in Safari.

An example of such an application for the iPhone can be seen at:

http://ichess.morfik.com (for iPhone users)

http://chess.morfik.com (for all other users)

I've tried the chess game on both the iPhone and my laptop and it works very nicely.
