Motorola has won a third generation mobile phone contract from Spanish telco Telefonica Moviles.

Telefonica Moviles has chosen Motorola to roll out its UMTS network in Spain as well as its GPRS mobile data services on the Movistar GSM network. Motorola is working with Cisco to design an IP-based architecture to integrate voice, data and multimedia networks. The two companies are currently developing a Tetra infrastructure for commercial deployment in Spain as well as building an application development centre to create consumer applications for GPRS and 3G networks. Motorola has already helped BT Cellnet and Germany's T-Mobile launch GPRS services in June. Telefonica Moviles is expected to start its commercial UMTS service next August while its GPRS service is due to go live by the end of this year.
