Microsoft has given in to reason by saying it will next week post a patch letting Internet Explorer (IE) users upgrade their Authenticode certification before the June 30 deadline.

The only previous option for IE users was to download a new version of the full IE 3.02 or else face the chance of receiving "erroneous warning messages" on signed controls they had not downloaded.

Now Microsoft says that all IE version 3.0 and later users need do is download the 400Kb Authenticode 2.0 update. However, it cautions that the upgrade will only be good for "most" users of IE 3.0, 3.01a, 3.01b, 3.02, and the 4.0 Platform Preview. Users who wish to upgrade other features will still have the option of downloading IE 3.02, now with Authenticode 2.0.

Microsoft said the new version of Authenticode also provides new features including time stamping.
