myTouch 3G Fender may be sold out, new myTouch 3G launches

I recently posted my review of the myTouch 3G Fender Edition and understood it was a limited edition device. I never gave much thought to the "limited edition" part since that never seems to mean much of anything, but according to TmoNews the device actually did sell out at T-Mobile. There were apparently 17,250 units available when it was released three weeks ago and you can no longer buy one. T-Mobile also announced the new myTouch 3G device with 3.5mm headset jack and double the RAM.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunuately for those who still want one, T-Mobile is apparently going to roll out another round of these devices in April. While I understand they want to sell more since they seem popular, it kind of takes away from the limited edition appeal with more being made. I guess it will be a semi-limited edition device now.

Speaking of the myTouch 3G, T-Mobile just announced an update to the myTouch 3G with the exact same name as the previous model. The new T-Mobile myTouch 3G offers the following improvements over the current model:

  • A built-in 3.5mm headset jack and updated music player
  • Additional memory with 288 MB of RAM and an 8GB microSD card
  • Swype, an innovative text input technology, providing a faster and more intuitive text input on the touch screen
  • Preloaded applications, including Barcode Scanner, Music Player, myAccount and Visual Voicemail

These are the same hardware improvements we saw in the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition model. This new device will be priced at $149.99 with a new two-year contract and qualifying plans and will replace the previous model.

Swype is a new text input method that is rolling out on certain Android models and is not something you can find in the Android Market. I would like to try it on my Nexus One, but am not sure it is coming as a download. I understand Swype is also coming to the T-Mobile HTC HD2, a Windows Mobile device, when it launches soon.
