in brief National Australia Bank today confirmed the outcome of a review into staffing would see the positions of a further 179 Australian technology staff threatened.

In July the bank revealed it was reviewing about 171 local positions with a view to deciding whether their functions could be provided more efficiently from NAB's facilities in India, which are run with the assistance of Satyam and Infosys, following an earlier March announcement that 264 jobs were heading offshore.

A bank spokesperson today confirmed NAB had contacted staff yesterday to inform them the completion of one section of the review put 179 jobs at risk, although some staff could pick up other roles within the bank or be placed at other companies.

A number of the staff are believed to be contractors. The NAB spokesperson stressed the review had nothing to do with the global economic crisis, as it had been ongoing for a number of years.
