NBA taps SAP to develop 'unprecedented statistical experience'

The NBA signs on as the latest SAP HANA customer, seeking a new fan-friendly but data-filled experience for its official website.

The National Basketball Association has inked a deal with SAP, which includes a multi-year partnership that would make the enterprise software giant the "Official Business Analytics Software Partner of the NBA."

As a new SAP HANA customer, the NBA is hoping to develop a new data platform that will deliver plenty of statistics in real-time to fans on the league’s official website, creating an "unprecedented statistical experience."

Most of these statistics were previously only available to NBA employees and select members of the media, so it could truly change the flow of traffic to NBA.com dramatically.

Other info that will also be available through this new platform includes statistical analysis of the entire history of the NBA along with real-time data about special events, fan interactions, and social media.

On the back-end of operations, the NBA has also signed up for SAP BusinessObjects business intelligence solutions for advanced analysis with SAP BusinessObjects Explorer software and SAP Data Services software to enhance data quality.

Furthermore, the partnership also includes a multi-year marketing agreement that also encompasses the WNBA and the NBA Development League, which would extend some of these data platform capabilities and features to several international markets, including Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India and Russia.
 
Scheduled to launch during the 2012-2013 basketball season, the SAP-based statistical platform is also expected to be optimized for mobile devices as well as desktop browsers.
