Research center aims to resolve "business and social concerns".

Located in its local office, NEC Laboratories Singapore (NLS) is the company's fifth research center following others in Japan, China, New Jersey and Cupertino in the U.S., and Germany. Singapore is the company's Asia-Pacific headquarters.

Officially launched Monday, the new center will partake in joint research with the local government and businesses to develop and testbed products that leverage NEC technologies such as data mining, and image and audio analysis. The primary objective is to resolve infrastructure challenges both locally and globally, where special attention will be directed to safety, big data, security, and smart energy.

NEC President Nobuhiro Endo added in a statement that the NLS hopes to develop new technologies that help "contribute to the resolution of a broad range of business and social concerns".

Welcoming the move, chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board Leo Yip, said the government has identified analytics and cybersecurity as growth areas for the country, which are aligned with the research center's focus segments.

NEC said the NLS already has close ties with local universities and research institutes including A*Star's Institute for Infocomm Research, the Nanyang Technological University, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design, to address the need for sophisticated social infrastructure in emerging markets across Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa.
