Nest is buying connected camera company Dropcam
After getting its too-smart smoke detectors back on the market last week, Google-owned Nest said it's making a big move to acquire another popular startup making Internet-connected home products.
Nest is buying Dropcam, the company that makes the top-selling security camera on Amazon, for $555 million, Re/Code reports.
Dropcam's security cameras allows users to monitor images from their home from anywhere, using a smartphone or tablet. Dropcam also offers a cloud recording service that stores video footage from your security camera on the cloud, for as little as $99 per year. And Dropcam's latest product, Tabs, will allow users to put a small device on objects to notify users when something like a door or laptop is opened or closed.
In a blog post, Nest said you won't see many changes in the Dropcam products in the near future:
Eventually, the plan is for us to work together to reinvent products that will help shape the future of the conscious home and bring our shared vision to more and more people around the world. For now though, not much will change. Dropcam products will still be sold online and in stores. And Dropcam customers will still continue to use their Dropcam accounts.
It was just a few months ago that Nest itself was snatched up by Google, for $3.2 billion.
