Netflix has a couple of pieces of big news today. Not only is the online rental company stepping up the audio quality, but Netflix is also dropping the discs for access from Sony PlayStation 3 consoles.

First off, Netflix has tapped Dolby Digital Plus for some help with the audio playback, which will bring 5.1 channel surround sound to the Watch Instantly service.

Better yet, streaming Netflix content over a PS3 will be even simpler starting October 18 as owners of these consoles can start watching without inserting a disc. The default resolution will still be 720p, but some TV and movie content will be available in 1080i.
