Netflix original series 'Lilyhammer' on the way next month

Summary:Netflix is launching its first original show, which could prove to be necessary if Netflix loses any more studio partnerships.

Netflix didn't have the best 2011 -- especially during the latter six months -- and the rental service could use a few hit projects in 2012.

One such project that Netflix is counting on is its own original programming. That could open the door to much more original content, which might prove to be necessary if Netflix loses any more studio partnerships.

So get ready to start watching "Lilyhammer." Yes, that is really the name of the new show. (I didn't think it could get much worse than "Qwikster," but never say never.)

And yes, if you're wondering why the sound of the show's title sounds familiar, it really is set in Lillehammer, Norway.

Here's the show's description:

"Lilyhammer," follows New York mobster Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano as he enters the federal witness protection program after ratting on his boss. A sports fan, Frank wants to make his new life in Lillehammer, the Norwegian town that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics – or as he calls it "Lilyhammer." Frank has visions of a paradise of "clean air, fresh white snow and gorgeous broads" far away from the temptations of the Big Apple and from mob hit men. Reality, of course, turns out to be spectacularly different.

Sounds like In Plain Sight meets Hart of Dixie meets Northern Exposure. Fingers crossed for Netflix we all know it needs this to turn out to be a big hit.

The show will be led by The Sopranos star and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt. All eight episodes will be available simultaneously on Netflix's Watch Instantly service starting on February 6 in the United States, Canada, and Latin America.
