Networking vendor Netgear has announced the voluntary recall yesterday of its XE103 Powerline Ethernet Adapter after test results confirmed the product could overheat and malfunction.

A Netgear spokesperson told ZDNet Australia that local consumers are advised the recall applies both domestically and overseas, and the company estimates that of the 82,000 affected adaptors, around 2100 units have been sold in Australia.

Netgear said the adaptors were designed for a 220-240 volt power source, but when tested under these conditions they were found to overheat and generally malfunction.

Patrick Lo, chairman and chief executive officer of Netgear, described the recall as being in the best interest of consumers, saying in a statement: "Although we do not know of any injury or damage caused by the affected Powerline Ethernet Adapter, the safety and satisfaction of our customers remain our top priorities."

Netgear advises customers stop using the adaptor immediately and contact its Australian offices for a free replacement.
