New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is one of India's busiest domestic and international airports, more so as the recent Terminal 3 was constructed and opened in time for the Commonwealth Games in October 2010.
In addition to providing the latest amenities as one would expect from an airport in the West, such as a high speed connection with Delhi Metro, now comes the launch of the IGIA mobile app, according to a TV news segment Zee Business Mobiles and Gadgets.
The IGIA mobile app is envisioned to not only provide details such as real-time arrivals and departures, but extend the user experience. For example, it will also provide real-time traffic updates for the surrounding roads leading to and from the airport, so passengers can properly plan their route.
Furthermore, the IGIA mobile app will also provide real-time stats on the number of parking spots available on each floor of the parkade, and allow people to select a specific parking spot, if required. Naturally, reservation of specific parking spots is a premium service.
Another interesting feature is the ability to directlyfrom the IGIA app, upon arrival and before clearing customs, and have the taxi waiting for pick-up. This would not only reduce waiting time but also clear up the traffic congestion at the arrivals section.
The IGIA mobile also gives users a glimpse of the available stores and shopping facilities in both the domestic and international terminals, along with a detailed map to show the locations.
Unfortunately, lacking from the IGIA mobile app is the ability toeither domestically or internationally at this point. Another feature that is lacking is the ability to rent cars or book either bus tickets or train tickets to other destinations, upon arrival.
The IGIA mobile app will be available for the Apple iOS, Google Android, and BlackBerry platforms. No word as of yet in terms of pricing, but most likely, this would be a free app with the costs absorbed by the consortium in charge of operating and running IGIA in New Delhi.
