New player arrives in Hong Kong 4G market

Mobile operator 3 Hong Kong becomes fourth player to launch 4G services in city, promising speeds up to 100Mbps, says report.

Competition in Hong Kong's 4G market intensifies as 3 Hong Kong launches its long-term evolution (LTE) services in the city, making it the fourth 4G mobile service provider in the market, notes report.

A Sina report Thursday said the mobile unit of Hutchison Telecommunications rolled out its 4G services, which promised connection speeds of up to 100Mbps and a 90 percent coverage of the city. The company will have full coverage of the city by the third quarter, it noted.

The mobile operator is offering three smartphones, one tablet and a dongle for its 4G customers.

3 Hong Kong is the fourth LTE player in the market, as it joins CSL, China Mobile Hong Kong and HKT. China Mobile's Hong Kong subsidiary reportedly launched its LTE services in late April with plans to introduce a total of 10 4G phones by the end of the year.

A report by local daily The Standard noted that 3 Hong Kong's 4G price plans are only about HK$20 (US$2.60) to HK$40 (US$5.20) more compared with its similar 3G price plan.
