New Taiwanese center to train wireless app developers

Qualcomm and Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry (III) have collaborated to open a training center for wireless applications developers to develop software on Qualcomm's BREW platform.

According to a media statement released by Qualcomm, the center will provide developers with access to training materials, testing tools and tech support for the BREW platform.

Said Tony Li, the telecom equipment maker's senior director of business development: "Advanced mobile communications services are growing fast in Taiwan… Applications such as picture messaging, ringtones, games and other services have already gained a foothold here.

"Qualcomm feels that the introduction of new technologies that support higher data transmission rates will open the door for more advanced services such as location-based services, live video transmission, and music and video downloads," he noted.

J.S. Ke, president for III, said: "The value and success of mobile application services are evident in neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea. III is determined to bring that value to the local market and improve technologies for the wireless industry in Taiwan."

Established in 1979, the Institute assumes a role as the Taiwanese government's think tank for the ICT industry, focusing on increasing the country's global competitiveness through its IT infrastructure and community. It also aims to promote the use of ICT in the public and private sectors.
