New Zealand recorded the highest growth in PC sales in the Asia-Pacific region for the second quarter of 2014, according to new research by International Data Corporation (IDC).
Personal computer shipments in New Zealand hit 191,000 units for the second quarter of 2014, according to IDC's Asia-Pacific Quarterly PC Tracker, resulting in a year-on-year increase of 19 percent, and quarter-over-quarter rise of 10 percent.
IDC believes that given New Zealand's leading position in PC unit sales growth for the first half of 2014, the country is expected to attain the status as the best performing market in the region throughout the year.
The findings indicate that strong consumer confidence and a falling unemployment rate provided the momentum for boosting consumer interest in PCs for the quarter.
The company said that growth in the commercial space was prompted by continued PC replacements, on account of routine business purchases along with Windows XP migration — prompted by Microsoft's decision tofor the operating system in April.
"This solid augmentation was driven by an array of factors and was supported by a positive economic scenario," said IDC market analyst Arunachalam Muthiah. "Robust performance of entry level notebooks, declining prices, impending saturation of the tablet market, channel and end-user promotions, and substantial business deals across the commercial segment worked in unison to contribute to this increase."
Of the top five PC vendors operating in New Zealand, IDC found that HP topped the pack, claiming 37 percent of sales volume followed — but not too closely — by Acer, which took 17 percent. Apple got 12 percent of the NZ market, Toshiba secured 10 percent, and Dell saw 6 percent.
In July, Gartner revealed that worldwide PC sales growth had effectively flat-lined, with neutral growth during the second quarter of 2014, with the industry seeing just 0.1 percent growth year-on-year for the quarter at 75.8 million units.
However, IDC, whicharound the same time, found that global PC shipments for the second quarter totalled 74.4 million units, a drop of 1.7 percent.
