News Burst: AMD downplays HotRail chipset pullout

Chip maker says it wasn't depending on HotRail technology to move into lucrative server/workstation market

AMD says its plans to encroach upon the Intel-dominated market for server and workstation processors remain unchanged despite the loss of support from HotRail, a chip technology manufacturer.

HotRail had been planning to launch a chipset that would have allowed PC manufacturers to build machines with six or eight AMD Athlon processors, but has decided to pull out of the chipset market in favour of networking technology.

An AMD spokesman said the move will not have a "great deal of impact" on the chip maker's server plans as AMD has its own chipset on the way.
