News Burst: Oftel sets unmetered access talks

Now Oftel says it's getting directly involved to cut phone charges

Telcoms watchdog Oftel will challenge industry Tuesday to bring down the cost of Internet access.

At a secret meeting with the regulator, members of AOL, CUT (Campaign for Unmetered Telecommunications), BT, Energis and Freeserve will give views on the way forward for Internet access in the UK. New arrangements for charging users will be discussed and it is believed Oftel will encourage operators to introduce unmetered access.

"It is our intention to drive down prices," an Oftel spokesman said. No further details of the meeting are yet available.
