News Burst: When will consumers get their hands on broadband?

Unbundling of the local loop has been ordered by the EC by the end of the year, but with BT sticking to a July schedule, the outcome for consumers is unclear

With the EC calling for unbundling of the local loop by December of this year and BT sticking to a July timetable it is unclear Thursday when UK consumers can expect broadband services.

Unbundling of the local loop is seen as a key driver for delivering fast access Internet services and the EC is determined to force Europe's incumbent telcos to unbundle as quickly as possible.

Oftel maintains the UK is ahead of schedule and that the legal framework for unbundling will be complete by December. Services, however, will not be delivered until July.
