Usually omnipresent software mogul Microsoft all but vanished last week when its most prized Web sites disappeared from view. Microsoft.com, MSN.com, WindowsMedia.com, Encarta.com, Carpoint.com and Expedia.com vanished without trace, only occasionally flickering into life, and Microsoft could only scratch its head. After reluctantly admitting that its own technicians caused the outage and bringing its sites back to life, however, a stressed-out Microsoft saw its sites disappear under a denial of service (DoS) attack.
