SINGAPORE, 24 July 2000 -- North 22 Technology Services Group (North 22) and Sybase Inc, an independent software company, has announced the formation of a joint venture to capture Asia's emerging Enterprise Portal market.

The joint venture will capitalise on North 22's existing Application Service Provider (ASP) arm, 8layer.com. 8layer.com is the first ASP in Asia to form a strategic alliance with Sybase to provide application services utilising Sybase's leading software technology, the Sybase Enterprise Portal.

"As the strong demand for ASP services continue to rise in Asia (especially in the B2B segment), we expect the Enterprise Portal portion of our business to represent more than 50% of our customer base within the next 12 months. We will also be leveraging heavily on Sybase's technical expertise in developing B2B capabilities for Enterprise Portal that address the unique requirements of the Asian market," said Michael Ng, Chairman and CEO of North 22.

The Sybase Enterprise Portal personalises critical business information and transactions to each specific user, integrates applications across the enterprise and delivers a scalable enterprise portal solution to customers, partners, suppliers and employees.

"Think of enterprise portals as the next evolution of intranets. If Intranet portals provide a window into the information of the Internet, it is safe to say that enterprise portals provide a window into the information of an enterprise"

8layer.com provides ready-to-use, off-the-shelf e-business application services designed to reduce costs, the need for skilled manpower and hasten time-to-market for both large enterprises and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in Asia. This is done via a subscription-based, pay-as-you-use arrangement, and can be conveniently accessed using web technologies.

Since its successful launch in January 2000, 8layer.com's rapid expansion has included setting up of the R&D headquarters in Singapore and ASP operations in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Through its joint venture with Sybase, 8layer.com will continue to focus on building the first Pan-Asian ASP infrastructure that covers Singapore, Hong Kong, PRC, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia and Korea.
