Nuance's virtual assistant technology is heavily dependent upon the proliferation of various mobile devices, and now it is time to connect the dots.
The Burlington, Mass.-headquartered company looks to be doing so with the introduction of Nuance Cloud Services, a platform designed to connect individual mobile devices, services, and apps and "transform" them into smart personal assistants.
Without delving into too many more details, Nuance described the Cloud Services platform as a method for equipping its virtual personal assistants with "both a brain and a personality" for the purpose of better serving users in the long term.
It's also likely a method for streamlining data from its diverse user base worldwide for better understanding how the technology is being used, where, why, and more.
Nuance revealed in Monday's announcement that there have already been 10 billion transactions on Nuance's existing mobile cloud stemming from various sources across its portfolio of intelligent systems, such as the Dragon Mobile Assistant, Dragon Assistant for Intel-powered devices, Dragon Voicemail-to-Text, and other mobile apps produced by Nuance's mobile developer program.
According to the software company, Nuance now sees more than 100 million monthly active users of its services as of December 2013, using products made by everyone from BMW to Samsung.
The timing of this announcement plays a large role too. Nuance is rolling out its new cloud services at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where connected devices and the overall "Internet of Things/Everything" bonanza.
