Mobile operator O2's service outage is still causing problems for customers who joined its network or upgraded since the issues began on Friday.

Calls, texts and data for existing customers should be working again as of Monday, as O2 has fixed the broken network node that caused the problem, the operator said. However, it is still working through a small backlog of customers who signed on or changed their subscription plans since the service glitches hit.

"One of our network nodes, which help connect and manage traffic, experienced a partial failure on Friday morning," an O2 spokesman said. "By lunchtime, this caused a number of our customers to have difficulty connecting to our network to make calls or use data. A fix was found by 3.30pm and service was restored by late evening on Friday."

"A small number of customers have experienced a further delay as the backlog of network requests clears," he added.

The day-long breakdown in services affected some 10 percent of O2's customer base — around 2 million people.

It is the second outage in three months for O2. The previous problem resulted in 24 hours of downtime and ended up with O2 offering goodwill compensation to its customers. However, the operator has said it will not hand out vouchers or make any restitution for the latest incident.

"While this network outage was highly regrettable, we will not be offering compensation in this case. We are genuinely sorry that a number of customers had problems with their service," the spokesman said.
