Oracle buys network signaling firm Tekelec

Oracle has entered an initial agreement to buy Tekelec, a network signaling company for data and multimedia networks that leads in subscriber data and policy control management solutions.

The enterprise technology giant said the acquired firm will be snapped up into its communications portfolio.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Oracle said that the proliferation of smart devices, mobile applications and connected services has led to an increase in data traffic and networking signaling. By snapping up the firm, the company hopes to help address the issues of increasing network workloads. Tekelec's technology will help complement Oracle's communications portfolio by furthering its ability to address their rise in subscriber data usage and will deploy and monetize cloud services, among others.

Tekelec allows service providers — such as mobile broadband companies — to deliver, control and monetize personalized services and help manage the growth of an exponential rise in data traffic, with its technology used by more than 300 service providers in over 100 countries.

Tekelec was taken private a little over a year ago in a deal valued at around $780 million. It represents the firm's third acquisition this year, after private cloud software provider Nimbula earlier this month, and Acme Packet in February.

The firm said its recent acquisition of Acme Packet, a networking hardware company for telecoms and service providers snapped up by Oracle for $1.9 billion in February, will work in combined effort with Tekelec to offer an overall improvement to networking operations by helping to control network resources.
