26 Nov 99 (Manila Bulletin):-ORACLE Corporation has announced the first fully functional transactional database for handheld devices. Oracle8i Lite, the only mobile solution with 100 percent central deployment and management of mobile applications, ensures that mobile workers have access to their data and mobile e-business applications anytime, anywhere, on any device.

Oracle8i Lite for the Palm Computing platform and Psion EPOC computing platform is immediately available and downloadable at no cost to Internet developers via the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) at http://technet.oracle.com.

"IT Managers must be able to control mobile data and applications. The Oracle8i Lite product provides a new solution for centralizing management of handhelds and enabling a new generation of quick, easy enterprise data access applications on the Palm Computing platform," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development at Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company.

For instant, up-to-date Field Access to Information and Applications in San Francisco, contractors and inspectors can pick up a Palm Computing product (running a Bidcom construction application on Oracle8i Lite) to do instant, on-site data collection. At the end of the day, they simply perform a HotSync function with a central Oracle database, creating a paperless, time and cost efficient workflow automation system.

"The Bidcom, Oracle and Palm Computing solution have revolutionized the way we do inspections in the field today," said Harlan Kelly Jr., city engineer for City and County of San Francisco. "The affordability of the PalmComputing products and the ease with which inspection data can be collected and centralized gives us a unique means of sharing information about a construction project's progress. The speed with which inspection data can be shared results in considerable time and cost savings by contractors in the City of San Francisco."

Oracle8i Lite, the Internet platform for mobile computing, is a comprehensive suite of enterprise software used to build, deploy and centrally manage mobile e-business applications. The DBMS is a single-user, 50KB-750KB footprint, object relational database specifically designed for mobile synchronization with central databases.
