Previously offered as a turnkey upgrade service for the 27-inch 2011 iMac model, Other World Computing will now offer its solid-state drive upgrades as a DYI upgrade kit.

This OWC Internal SSD DIY Kit is not for upgrade newbies, since it requires users to remove the glass screen with several suction cups. The $45 kit includes the screwdrivers, suction cups, modified heat shields and cables for the upgrade; the various solid-state drive upgrades are sold separately. OWC's memory and eSATA upgrades are also available if you're opening up the box.

The company suggests that potential customers watch the installation video to see if you're sufficiently bold enough to do the upgrade. It's not for the faint of heart.

If you're interested in this upgrade but without the do-it-yourself part, OWC offers an installation service program with turnaround time of 48 business hours.
