Pinterest woos developers with APIs aiming to 'bring Pins to life'

This marks the first time Pinterest is opening up API access for development of consumer apps tied to the digital scrapbooking phenomenon.

As pins on Pinterest continue to pile up (by the millions, no less), it appears so too do the potential marketing and development opportunities available on top of the blossoming social network.

In a bid to woo more developers, Pinterest unveiled its own Developer Platform on Monday, trotting out a suite of APIs to encourage developers to build apps and integrations "that bring Pins to life."

In other words, products that could churn some revenue out of those wanderlust-inducing and craftsy weekend ideas.

Developers do have a lot of content available at their fingertips to work with as the Pinterest graph has grown to host more than 50 billion pins representing a myriad of projects, places and products -- many of which could be monetized with a little further imagination.

(To put Pinterest's rapid growth into perspective, the visual bookmarking tool boasted just 30 billion in March.)

"As a developer, you'll have the chance to build something that makes those Pins a reality, like apps for ordering ingredients from a recipe Pin or booking trips based on travel Pins," suggested Josh Inkenbrandt, a product manager on Pinterest's Developer Platform team, in a blog post on Monday.

Soft launching in beta, the Pinterest Developer Platform is opening up in the United States first, where developers can sign up for API access.

Pinterest has been stocking up on the data and infrastructure side of the business lately.

The San Francisco-based company recently unveiled "Pinnability," the collective code name for Pinterest's advanced machine learning models in development to improve its home feed. The idea is the more people Pin, the better Pinterest can be for each user, in both surfacing relevant content and proving to be a more fruitful experience overall.

With an estimated valuation of $11 billion and counting, it's high time for Pinterest to prove its worth.

Tapping into machine learning (becoming a bigger and bigger trend in IT right now thanks to AWS, Nvidia and others) as well as active developer outreach could strengthen Pinterest's reputation and influence among both its users and potential Wall Street backers.
