Software maker BroadQ announced a partnership with cable TV gear provider Advent Networks to allow Sony's PlayStation 2 game console to serve as a conduit for streaming media delivered via cable TV wires. BroadQ's QCast Tuner software for the PS2 allows the game machine to play MPEG-4 and DivX video and MP3 music files.

BroadQ earlier this year announced a partnership with software maker SnapStream to allow the PS2 to play media files stored on a PC. Advent's hardware would let a cable provider stream pay-per-view movies to a subscriber's PS2, allowing the game console to function as a digital set-top box. --David Becker, Special to ZDNet News
