Companies that let employees access corporate resources from remote locations should take care to ensure the network and information systems are protected from unauthorized access and use. Here's a look at three new products designed for better protection.

Netgear Firewall Router
The ProSafe 802.11g Wireless VPN Firewall 8 is designed for small office and remote/branch offices, incorporating advanced security features which provide secure network protection. The firewall supports up to eight VPN connections which connect users “virtually” to local office resources.

Compatible with Windows, UNIX Linux, and Macintosh operating systems, this hardware is optimized for use with NETGEAR’s ProSafe VPN Client Software and ProSafe Network Management Software. The router retails at US$181.

ThinkPad Z60
Lenovo's latest offering boasts of style and substance all in one package. In addition to the classic black ThinkPad design, the first widescreen multimedia ThinkPad notebook is also available in a special-edition brushed titanium cover.

The ThinkPad Z60's 15.4-inch display offers 30 percent more data space than a 15-inch XGA. It is merely 28mm thick and weighs in at just 2.1kg.

For enhanced security, the notebook is equipped with the ThinkVantage Client Security Solution which enables users to recover logon passwords themselves. It also features disk properly secure their system. The notebook is priced from S$2,399 (US$1420.20) onwards.

D-Link Integrated Firewall
Looking for a firewall designed for a small business? The DFL-800 packs VPN (virtual private network) and firewall functions in a single housing, including load balance, fault tolerance, user authentication, content filtering, Denial of Service (DoS) protection, VPN secure remote connection, and bandwidth management.

The firewall features "Zone-Defense", a mechanism that operates seamlessly with D-Link LAN switches to perform proactive network security. Zone-Defense minimizes any impact of a disaster on an entire network, and automatically quarantines infected computers on the network and prevents them from flooding your network with malicious traffic.

The DFL-800 costs S$1,080 (US$639.40), and will be available in November.
