Putting Your Life in the Cloud

Storing stuff in the cloud and using cloud-based applications is making more and more sense in the "digital me" world we live in. We record, photograph, and document our lives in more and more ways.

Doc is thrilled by the trend toward "cloud" computing. We live in a world of multiple devices, lots of travel, and people taking work home and taking home to work. Why should all our digital "stuff" be stuck on one laptop or one desktop or even one mobile phone?

And more and more not only do we need to share information, documents, and digital media with ourselves, we want to share it with colleagues, friends, and family members. It just doesn't make sense that we should have to have multiple copies or worse, move around all this stuff to all the places it needs to go.

Storing stuff in the cloud and using cloud-based applications is making more and more sense in the "digital me" world we live in. We record, photograph, and document our lives in more and more ways.

I've tested a few "digital lifestyle" cloud-based applications and the problem is always that it's too hard to back-up or copy your stuff to the cloud, and there are usually all sorts of file-size limits and other restrictions that makes it difficult to have a one-place-fits-all repository for your digital life.

And then, even if you move all your stuff to the cloud, how on earth are you ever going to find what you're looking for? The file-folder hierarchy we've come to know is very limited in today's world of gigabytes and terabytes.

Well, let me introduce you to my new favorite digital friend, the oddly named quanp (say "kwan-puh"). This new service, from Ricoh, stands for "quantum paper," And that's an apt description.

Today, Doc is just going to tease you a bit about this new service – I'll cover it in more detail over the next few days, but it's a beta-service that aggregates all of your digital stuff in an intuitive and three-dimensional way, making it both easy to store and easy to retrieve.

If you can't stand the anticipation, go ahead and watch this introductory video.  Then tune in here on a regular basis to learn more about this amazing (and currently free) service.

And check out the cool new iPhone app for quanp.
