Following days of system woes for Virgin Blue, the Qantas baggage check-in system at the Sydney Airport T3 terminal crashed this morning, causing flight delays of up to 30 minutes.

Staff have reverted to a manual check-in system to process affected passengers, which the ABC reports could involve hundreds of people.

The system had crashed for about 30 minutes, according to Qantas, but it did not say if the source of the failure was known.

"We had a relatively brief outage for about 30 minutes. We have activated contingency arrangements [and] expect delays of 30 minutes on some flights," Qantas told ZDNet Australia.

It said the system failure is unrelated to its passenger check-in system, which remains unaffected.

The delays come days after rival airline Virgin Blue was crippled by massive failures in its passenger check-in system. Qantas' discount airline Jetstar was also affected by those outages.

Flight delays are expected to clear early this afternoon, according to Qantas.
