QMS readies cheapest ever colour laser

High-end printer maker QMS will show its latest colour laser model at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany starting this Thursday.

Also shown at last week's Windows '98 show in London, the unit is magicolor 2 DeskLaser and is most notable for its list price of £1,795 in a market where well over £2,000 is the norm. Street pricing will likely fall to under the list price even with VAT is included when the product ships in the UK in April.

The unit prints at up to 8 colour pages per minute or 16 in 600 x 600dpi monochrome mode. It comes as standard with a 250-sheet paper tray, 8Mb RAM and Ethernet and uses the Windows Printing System that taps host PC resources for processing.

The company said that the magicolor 2 will compete with LAN-ready colour inkjet machines.
