RealNetworks CEO Robert Kimball stepped down on Monday. A search is underway for a replacement.

The resignation of Kimball is a strange move. He restructured the company, had a coherent software as a service strategy and was plotting new products to get the company back into the game.

Now Kimball is out just when RealNetworks was outlining its strategy more. In a statement, RealNetworks said it appointed Mike Lunsford, an executive vice president, to be interim CEO. Kimball had been with Real since January 2010.

Kimball said he set RealNetworks up to grow again with "a clean bill of health and a strong foundation." Kimball wanted to "find new challenges and opportunities."

RealNetworks Chairman Rob Glaser said the search is underway for a permanent CEO.
