Renewed outages hit Telecom NZ network

Telecom New Zealand has suffered yet more outages on its XT network early today, with problems reported in the North Island towns of New Plymouth and Upper Hutt.

"We're aware some customers in New Plymouth and Upper Hutt may be experiencing XT service issues. Techs working hard to restore full service," the company said on its Twitter account.

Telecom spokesperson Katherine Murphy told ZDNet.com.au that the problems started affecting the network around 3.30am. Service was progressively restored, with New Plymouth fully operational by midday. The Upper Hutt area was expected to be fully operational by early afternoon.

Murphy declined to comment on any possible cause for this recent fault.

This latest outage has come as the telco is still working out what caused an outage to the troubled XT network on Monday night. Text messaging had been affected along with some calls following a glitch at the company's Christchurch Radio Network Centre — the same place where the previous faults have occurred.

Mark Watts, Telecom spokesperson, told ZDNet.com.au today that the telco had not discovered the "root cause" of Monday's outage but was "taking action to ensure the SMS service was running smoothly".

The telco had already suffered two major outages in December and January. Telecom expects to announce shortly which international organisation will be conducting an Independent Review of the XT network.
