PC shipments in Western Europe, the Middle East and Africa declined in the third quarter, according to research firm Gartner. Western European PC shipments were down 11 percent, while PC shipments across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) fell by 6 percent, the firm said Thursday. Of the top five EMEA PC makers--Compaq Computer, Dell Computer, Fujitsu Siemens, Hewlett-Packard and IBM--only Dell saw an increase in shipments.
Meanwhile, Compaq, IBM and Fujitsu-Siemens saw double-digit percentage declines in shipments of 18.8 percent, 30.4 percent and 23.9 percent, respectively. HP maintained shipments around the same level. Dell increased shipments by 5.6 percent. As a result, it increased its share to 8.6 percent of the market, within a few points of Compaq's 11.4-percent market share in the third quarter, Gartner said. --John G. Spooner, ZDNet News
