BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has extended the deadline for developers wanting to submit apps for consideration in RIM's Built for BlackBerry program.

The scheme was designed to encourage developers to build high-quality, exclusive apps for the BlackBerry 10 platform ahead of its launch at the end of January, but RIM has decided to extend the closing deadline due to a backlog of applications submitted for review.

"Developers may apply for Built for BlackBerry review and the $10K Developer Commitment offer in the BlackBerry World Vendor Portal by 20:00 ET 18 Feb," RIM said in an announcement on its developer pages on Monday.

As part of the scheme, any developer who submitted a qualifying app that was deemed "Built for BlackBerry" would qualify for inclusion in its $10,000 Developer Commitment, which means that as long as an app earns at least $1,000 on the store, RIM will make up the difference up to $10,000. The $10,000 pot will cover sales between March 4, 2013 and March 3, 2014.

However, RIM also reminded developers that apps built using the BlackBerry App Generator and Android apps ported across to the platform do not qualify.

The smartphone maker has also run a number of "port-a-thons" recently to encourage developers to make their apps compatible with its new BlackBerry platform. In two weekends alone, these events added more than 30,000 app submissions to BlackBerry World, formerly known as BlackBerry App World.
