Research In Motion's PlayBook tablet will go on sale in the UK in mid-June, the company said on Tuesday as it also announced pricing for the device.

The PlayBook, which will initially be sold through Dixons Retail, Carphone Warehouse, Insight UK and Phones 4u, will become available on 16 June, with the cheapest configuration costing £399. That version will have 16GB of inbuilt memory, with the 64GB variant set to cost £560. Some of the retailers are taking pre-orders.

The tablet runs on an operating system called QNX — RIM is currently in the process of moving even its BlackBerry smartphones away from the BlackBerry OS and onto QNX. The PlayBook supports Adobe Flash and includes popular functionality such as videoconferencing.

RIM said in March that it would make it possible for customers to run Android applications on the PlayBook.
