13/7/2001 Having grown up in a church family, I'm not unfamiliar with the notion that theocracies breed bizarre rules. So it is good to read that on the whole, Islamic clerics consider it unlawful to divorce your wife by text message, voicemail or other impersonal means. Islam is of course no more homogenous than any other major world religion, so I dare say there'll be dissenters and we haven't heard the last of it. Telephonic divorce may still be on the cards -- which means there might still be room for my new sitcom, "With This Ring I Thee Unwed". I'll get me coat. (Oh, bad news. The dolphin reported last week as playing happily in the Thames has been found washed up in Wapping. Hardly the first intelligent animal to meet this sad end, but a terrible shame nonetheless).
